What is truth?

"THE GOSPEL OF JOHN"

                             What Is Truth?
(John 18:37-38)
“Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, thou sayest that I am a king, To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. Pilate saith unto him, what is truth? And when he had said this, he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault at all.”

INTRODUCTION

1. When Jesus appeared before Pilate, the subject of truth was
   discussed...
   a. Jesus claimed to bear witness to the truth
   b. Pilate raised the perennial question: "What is truth?"

2. Today, many people sound a lot like Pilate...
   a. A Barna Research Group survey on what Americans believe asked the
      question, "Is there absolute Truth?"...
      1) Sixty-six percent of adults responded that they believe that
"there is no such thing as absolute truth; different people can define truth in conflicting ways and still be correct"
      2) Seventy-two percent of those aged 18 to 25 expressed this
         belief
   b. In a series of more than twenty interviews conducted at random at a large university, people were asked if there was such a thing as
absolute truth - truth that is true across all times and cultures for all people. All but one respondent answered along these lines:
      1) "Truth is whatever you believe"
      2) "There is no absolute truth"
      3) "If there were such a thing as absolute truth, how could we
         know what it is?"
      4) "People who believe in absolute truth are dangerous"

I. THE BIBLICAL VIEW OF TRUTH

A. BIBLICAL WORDS FOR TRUTH...
1. True (alethes) - "unconcealed, manifest...actual, true to fact"
- Vine
2. True (alethinos) - "denotes 'true' in the sense of 'real,
ideal, genuine;'" - ibid.
3. Truth (aletheia)
a. "objectively, signifying 'the reality lying at the basis of
an appearance; the manifested, veritable essence of a
matter' (Cremer)" - ibid.
b. "subjectively, 'truthfulness,' 'truth,' not merely verbal,
but sincerity and integrity of character" - ibid.
-- When the Bible speaks of truth, it describes that which
corresponds to reality, what is factual and absolute, not
relative

B. BIBLICAL STATEMENTS REGARDING TRUTH...
1. God is a God of truth
“He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.”

2. Jesus is the truth, and full of truth, and spoke the truth
“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth and the life: no man cometh unto the father, but by me.”

 John 1:14
“And the word was made flesh, and dwelt among us,(and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.”

3. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth, and guided the apostles
into all the truth
“Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.”

“Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.”

4. The Word of God is truth
“Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. 18As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.”

5. The judgments of God are according to truth
“Before the LORD: for he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth: he shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with his truth.”

“But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things.”

6. Christians should walk in the truth as revealed by Jesus,
including the standard of morality He taught
“This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, 18Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: 19Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. 20But ye have not so learned Christ; 21If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: 22That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; 23And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; 24And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. 25Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another. 26Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: 27Neither give place to the devil. 28Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth. 29Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. 30And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. 31Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: 32And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.”

Ephesians 5:1-17
“1Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children; 2And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.
3But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; 4Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. 5For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. 6Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. 7Be not ye therefore partakers with them. 8For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light: 9(For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) 10Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. 11And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. 12For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret. 13But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light. 14Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. 15See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, 16Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. 17Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.”

7. Christians should patiently teach others the truth
“But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes. 24And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, 25In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; 26And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.”

8. Many will turn their ears away from the truth
“I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; 2Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. 3For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; 4And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.”

-- Much more could be said, as the Bible reveals so much about
what is truth

CONCLUSION

1. What is truth...?
   a. Truth is what is real
   b. God is real, and reveals what is real
   c. God is truth, and what He says is the truth

2. Call yourself what you may, but you cannot be a Christian unless...
   a. You hold the correspondence view of truth
   b. You believe in moral absolutes of right and wrong
   c. You accept Jesus and His Word as the ultimate source of truth,
especially in regards to morality and salvation

For those willing to accept Jesus as the ultimate source of truth, they will be greatly blessed.

“Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; 32And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. 33They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free? 34Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. 35And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever. 36If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”

**If you would like to give your heart to Jesus today, repeat these words below:

'Dear Heavenly Father,i come to in the name of Jesus; Forgive me a sinner and wash me in your precious blood. Make this heart of stone to be made flesh, so that your word may be sown in it. Any addictions that i may have, remove them now in Jesus name! I've accepted Jesus Christ as my savior and believe that He died and rose from the dead! And from this day forward, i commit my life to you and seek for guidance and understanding in your word, as i walk in your path of righteousness, In Jesus name i pray, AMEN!!!'

If you have recited these words and meant them in your heart, you are saved and if the Lord would come today, you will be ready to go to Heaven!! I will keep you all in prayer, to continue to walk in the ways of Jesus Christ our Lord. READ, PRAY, SEEK and TRUST in Him and you will overcome this wicked world! **

A New Birth!

The New Birth

(John 3:1-21)
Jesus and Nicodemus
1There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: 2The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. 3Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.4Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? 5Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. 8The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.9Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be? 10Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things? 11Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness. 12If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things? 13And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven. 14And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: 15That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
For God So Loved
16For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.”

THE NECESSITY OF THE NEW BIRTH (1-3)

A. NECESSARY TO SEE THE KINGDOM OF GOD...
1. Unless one is born again, he cannot see (enter) the kingdom
2. What is the kingdom of God?  In brief...
a. The rule and reign of God in the person of Christ
 Acts 2:36
Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus,
whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.
b. A spiritual kingdom not of this world –
John 18:36
Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world,
then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my
 kingdom not from hence.
c. A kingdom made up of faithful subjects (i.e., the church)
Colossians 1:13
Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated
us into the kingdom of his dear son:"
d. A kingdom both present and future
 Matthew 13:41-43
The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom
all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; 42And shall cast them into a
furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. 43Then shall the
righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear,
 let him hear.”

-- Do you wish to be in the kingdom now and hereafter?  You must
be born again!

B. NECESSARY TO BE SAVED...
1. To be in the kingdom is to be saved from the powers of darkness
2. Salvation requires a rebirth, a regeneration
 Titus 3:5
Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he
saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
-- Do you wish to be saved from your sins?  You must be born
again!

[Nicodemus is confused, assuming that Jesus has in mind a physical
birth.  So Jesus explains...]

THE NATURE OF THE NEW BIRTH (4-5)

A. INVOLVES BOTH WATER AND THE SPIRIT...
1. Note carefully:  one birth involving two elements - water and
the Spirit
a. Not two births (born of water and born of the Spirit)
b. But one birth (born of water and the Spirit)
2. Compare Paul's description
a. A washing of regeneration (water)
b. And renewing of the Holy Spirit (Spirit)
3. An obvious reference to baptism
-- The new birth occurs when one is baptized, for in that simple
act of faith they are born not only of the water out of which
they arise, but also born of the Spirit (regenerated) by the
working of God at that moment
 Colossians 2:12-13
Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the
operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead. 13And you, being dead in your sins
and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having
forgiven you all trespasses;”
B. INVOLVES THE WORD OF GOD...
1. One is born again by the Word
 1Peter 1:23
Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God,
which liveth and abideth for ever.
a.  The incorruptible Word that is preached
1Peter 1:25
But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the
gospel is preached unto you.
2. Jesus sanctifies and cleanses His church by the washing of
water by the word
 Ephesians 5:26
That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
-- The new birth involves several elements (water, Spirit, Word of
God), all coming together when one responds to the gospel in
baptism
 Acts 2:37-39
Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter
and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? 38Then Peter said
unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the
remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 39For the promise is unto
you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God
shall call.
THE EVIDENCE OF THE NEW BIRTH (6-8)

A. SEEN BY THE EFFECT OF THE SPIRIT...
1. We should expect that what the Spirit produces is spirit (i.e.,
spiritual)
 John 3:6
That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
-- Has one been truly born of the Spirit (i.e., born again)?  With
time there should be clear evidence that a change has occurred
 1John 3:14
We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren.
He that loveth not his brother abideth in death."
B. SEEN BY THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT...
1. Paul describes the fruit (evidence) of the Spirit
 Galatians 5:22-23
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
2. Which comes not only being born of the Spirit, but walking in
the Spirit
 Galatians 5:16
This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
-- Where the fruit does not appear, either there was never any
rebirth or one is walking after the flesh, not the Spirit!
 Galatians 5:17
For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are
contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.18But if ye be
led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

THE REJECTION OF THE NEW BIRTH (19-21)

A. MANY LOVE DARKNESS MORE THAN LIGHT...
1. Light (Jesus) has come into the world
 John 3:19
And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness
rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
2. There are those who love the darkness instead, because of their
evil deeds
-- Their love for things of the world cause them to reject the
light of Jesus
 Luke 16:14
And the Pharisees also, who were covetous, heard all these things: and they derided him.
B. MANY DO NOT WANT TO BE EXPOSED BY THE LIGHT...
1. They know that coming to Jesus will expose their evil deeds
- John 3:20
For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds
 should be reproved.
-- Unwilling to give up their evil deeds, they are unwilling to
submit to the new birth which acknowledges one's sinfulness and
requires repentance

2 Corinthians 5:17
"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."

Belonging to the Lord

*Christians are now God’s own special people*

1 Peter 2:9-10

“But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light: which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.”

-‘His own special people’ was once reserved for the physical nation of Israel

1. The Lord had chosen them:

Deuteronomy 10:15

“Only the Lord had a delight in thy fathers to love them, and he chose their seed after them, even you above all people, as it is this day.”

2. What had once been limited to physical Israel, is now possible to all people who are in Christ, as promised to Abraham

Galatians 3:8-9

“And the scripture, forseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed. So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.”

Galatians 3:28-29

“There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.”

3. Christians are the children of God in a very special way

-Because of their faith, and having put on Christ in baptism

Galatians 3:26-27

“For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.”

-Redeemed and adopted by God, they have received His Spirit into their hearts

Galatians 4:4-6

“but when the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, to redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the spirit of his sons into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.”

-Because we do the Father’s will, Jesus considers us as Family

Matthew 12:48-50

“But he answered and said unto him that told him, who is my mother? And who are my brethren? And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren! For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.”

-If we wish to receive the blessings, we need to patiently carry out our responisibilities with an enduring faith

Hebrews 10:35-39

“Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward. For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise. For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry. Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul have no pleasure in him. But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.”

-To abstain from worldly lusts

1 Peter 2:11

“Dearly, beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;”

-To obey the laws, and respect the leaders, of the countries in which we sojourn

1 Peter 2:13-17

Submit yourselves to every ordinance for the Lord’s sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well. For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God. Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.”

Be ye doers of the Word, not Hearers only

(Be ye doers of the word, not hearers only)

James 1:20-24 For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.

21 Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.

22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. 23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:

24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.

It is important to know what God's word say's, but it is much more important to obey it. We can measure the effectiveness of our bible study time by the effect it has on our behavior and attitudes.

Matthew 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

Verse 26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:

Romans 2:13 For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.

Superfluity: Something unnecessary - Immoderate and especially luxurious living, habits or, desires.

Example: Spends most of her money on designer clothes and other superfluities.

When our life falls in a trap for the cares of the world, we find ourselves in a snare, a trap of Satan's strong holds.

Nahum 3:12 All thy strong holds shall be like fig trees with the firstripe figs: if they be shaken, they shall even fall into the mouth of the eater.

Proverbs 23:12 Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.

A hearer only is like, the parable that Jesus spoke of the seeds that fell of stony ground.

Matthew 13:20-But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it;

21 Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended.

Verse 22 covers superfluities  He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.

There is a battle going on in our lives. The spirit of God wants us to please the Lord with the Godly deeds and labor for the kingdom of God, and our flesh wants to focus on the lust of the flesh.

Galatians 5:17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

Another scripture that clears this up is

James 1:14  But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.

Trust in the Lord         Proverbs 3:1-12

1My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments:

2For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.

3Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart:

4So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.

5Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

6In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

7Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.

8It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.

9Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:

10So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.

11My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction:

12For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.

Don't be left short on your relation with our Lord Jesus Christ. We will only have one chance to enter into his glory.

Hebrews 12:17 For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.

Forgiveness

 Forgiveness

Is it hard for you to forgive?

Have you ever seen a parent (or been that parent) trying to get your child to say, “I’m sorry.”? It is easier for some to say I’m sorry than others. I would also then have the other child say, “I forgive you.” Some children can offer forgiveness more readily than others. I remember one instance when my daughter said, “But, mom, he’s not sorry.” I explained that her brother said he was sorry, it was up to her to forgive him now. She then said, “But he didn’t mean.” The real problem was she was having trouble forgiving. We are expected to forgive even if the offender never says, “I’m sorry.” Do we realize that or do we just choose to ignore it?

2 Corinthians 2:7-8

“So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow. Wherefore I beseech you that ye would confirm your love toward.”

We show our love by forgiving. It is not always easy to forgive. We need to forgive for the sake of the offender, and we need to forgive for our own sake. When we harbor our hurt it festers and grows, turning into bitterness. Our bitterness will then affect more than just us.

Hebrews 12:15

“Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled.”

The person we say we cant forgive becomes our master. Our bitterness toward them controls our thoughts and actions. It consumes us. All we think about is how they hurt us and how we can get even. God’s Word clearly states if we do not forgive, God will not forgive us.

Matthew 6:14-15

“For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”

I have heard people say, “I can never forgive that person” that is scary. If you don’t forgive them, God wont forgive you, then what? There will come a time when we will need forgiveness. We reap what we Sow. Believe me, I know it is extremely hard to forgive when we have been deeply hurt. Sometimes it is a process. We cannot just snap our fingers and forgive. Yes, forgiveness is a choice, and a commandment. It is still something we struggle with and have to surrender to God, maybe more than one time.

Write the hurt or name of the offender on a piece of paper. Hold it in your hands and lift it up to God. “Here, God, I give this hurt to you. Please help me to let it go and forgive as you have forgiven me.” Then get rid of the paper. If you need to do this more than once, don’t feel like you are the only one who struggles like this. We need to continually strive to gain victory through forgiveness.

Matthew 5:44

“But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;”

There is something about praying for someone that can bring healing and change our attitude. The hardest thing about forgiveness is we feel we are giving up our right to be hurt if we forgive. We feel the other person won’t know how much they hurt us if we forgive easily.

In order to forgive we have to surrender that right to be hurt. We give up our resentment and our desire to punish. When we finally let it go and forgive we have such a peace, such a release. I have heard people say, “Get over it”. I have seen those same people realize it is not as easy as they say when they are the ones who have been hurt. Unforgiveness will hinder our prayers.

Mark 11:25-26

“And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.”

We all know the truth about forgiving. Now we must obey and live the truth. If we have to do it one day at a time, one hour at a time or even one minute at a time, we must do it.

1 Peter 1:22

“Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the spirit unto unfeigned (not fake, but real) love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:”
